In the far northwest, the park is named for the chain of dormant volcanoes that make up the Virunga Massif: Karisimbi, the highest at 4,507 metres, Bisoke with its green crater lake, Sabinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura. It shelters a large share of the world's critically endangered mountain gorillas along with other rare wildlife such as the golden monkey.
Akagera's plains take in savannah, woodland, wetland and a dozen lakes. The park very nearly vanished in the turbulent 1990s to poaching and settlement, but with peace and a determined conservation effort it has recovered magnificently: today it holds the Big Five, some 490 bird species and central Africa's largest protected wetland, a shining example of what conservation can achieve.
One of the Great Lakes of Africa, Kivu lies in the Rift Valley on the border with Congo, surrounded by mountains and dotted with sandy inland beaches. There is no better place to unwind after a gorilla trekking adventure.
